I still has a feeling that the major manufacturers are not making the bikes that previously attracted huge sales, like the Fazer/Bandit etc, reasonably cheap, reasonably well built, fun, and can be easily maintained by the owner

I tend to agree. Keeping pace with the emissions regulations I think plays a part but the trend to ever more unnecessary gadgetry, a lot of which is probably rarely used, all increases the cost and adds to the complexity and cost when something fails.
