In the user control panel you can change your default setting

Beliow this reply box there's:

* Do not subscribe to this thread
* Subscribe without receiving any notification of new replies
* Subscribe and receive email notification of new replies
* Subscribe and receive PM notification of new replies

Of these, Subscribe and receive email notfication of new repliies was default selected, but I can't see anywhere in the User CP that lets me change it, only an option that allows me to subscribe to a Forum if I want (which I've never chosen to do).
