I don't know about any other manufacturers, but Bridgstone say that they don't use a release agent.
Personally, I wait for a dry day when I have to get a new tyre, then go for a ride along the motorway to wear in the centre line, then do arcing lane changes to start working in the sides.
After that, I head out to the twisties, gradually increasing the speed through the turns until I'm getting towards the edges.
