Thanks for the suggestions guys.


Just taken both front callipers off and spun the wheel.  No noise at all and runs freely.  Was going to take front wheel off until I realised I don't have a 19mm bit for my half inch torque.
I'm content it's not the speedo drive anyway.


Definitely not wind noise.  You become tuned in to the noise of your own machine and it's not that.


The chain and sprockets were new last year and have just a thousand or so miles on them.


The suggestion around wheel movement is bang on.  I tightened the chain when I painted the side stand. 
The chain was quite slack so it could be that's it's now rubbing on the guide.


Simple to test I hear you say.  Not when you left the ignition on when you parked it last and the battery is flat!!!!


On charge so will test later.
