Try searching the forum for rounded screws ect as there are some good advice and techniques for solving.
My collector area - as you know is in sort of a hollow area shape so the putty has contact on loads of different sides and the cleaned up rust was rough which gave a grip surface.Your pipe is smooth so I would perhaps put a jubilee clip over the putty too. Maybe even a band of thin tin - like a car exhaust repair https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371663993702?...SwXTJbvxde . I have used gum gum on my collector without any clips due to the position but it fell off after a couple of months. But the JB weld - so far has been good.
