These are, as has been said one of the most reliable tensioners going. What often happens is they are stuck between teeth i.e. they need a bit more slack to get to the next notch. By turning the engine backwards it moves the slack around slightly and allows the ratchet to engage in the next tooth.
The other way is once the engine is up to temp, give it nice prolonged revs to say 8 - 9k for a mile or so a few times over a few rides. Do it in a low gear so as to stay within the speed limit, providing there's nothing else wrong with the bike it wont hurt it, the engine is designed to run at very high revs.
