It's because oil is cheap in the USA and so owners don't mind changing more frequently. Well, no, actually it's a scheme to ensure that Pep Boys do more business. Or maybe we just have better oil in Europe ... 
My guess, kidding aside, is that it's either to do with product liability/warranty issues in the USA or maybe Europe has better oil.
Or it could simply be a misprint. 6000 miles vs 6000kms.
