dont know how your tester is supposed to work, but simpler is to check the voltage between the + and - terminals on the battery with the motor running. At idle, should read around 12.5 to 13.5 volts. At 3000rpm should be up around 13.5 to 14 .5, no more than that. Increasing the revs more shouldnt increase the voltage. Have a look here
