But let's not forget that North Sea Cod stocks fell some 84% from 1870 to 2006.  We almost wiped out our fish stocks.

Not sure about the "WE" remark unless the "we" are humans.I was in Porto last year and was amazed to see so much cod -rows of it, salted and stacked up in boxes waist high with most of it about the size of a fazer seat - some bigger, that was in the equivalent size shop of a tesco express or Co-op. But smaller side street shops also sell it so that you can find it everywhere.
I don't see how the uk should feel so guilty about a shitty piece of cod once a fortnight from the local chippy.
Their love of salted cod comes from pre refrigeration days where they would have to salt it to survive the journey back to Portugal from the north sea.
