I would have gone to a car parts supplier or a hydraulic hose supplier with the bit of pipe in hand and ask if they can find something similar or better. Wouldn't cost anywhere near £50.
It's probably more about age and not mileage. 45,000 is still a fair amount anyway. Yeah my bike has done over 70,000 and hoses haven't been a problem but you're gonna get something fail every now and then. If it were a fairly new bike I would be concerned but after 45,000 miles I would just sigh/swear a lot/throw spanners around the garage before buying a new one.
