Wow, a whole 50 miles, thats probably less than a mile a year :rollin :rollin , you need to get out more
On a serious note I think the clips were phased out as they were not capable of handling the increased power of modern bikes.
I once went to look at a GSX750 and on inspecting the chain found two clips about 10 links apart, not a good idea!
