Might sound silly bit have you definitely plugged them into the right colours in the 3 to 1 lead? I've mixed up white and yellow a fair few times in the past ? I have the exactly same set up for my kids nintendo wii and it works fine?
If not I'm sure darrsi will be along soon to solve the issue for you haha

Unfortunately i know sod all about gaming, or the machines, although if it was in front of me it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.
See if this helps at all, especially noting if there’s a setting in the PS2 to change from RGB to YPbPr, and see if it helps at all?
