Were you checking it with a warm engine (5 mins or so after switching off) or with a cold engine?

You should normally check it when warm or you get a higher reading as all the oil drains out of the head etc.

Really?!?! I've always checked mine cold? When it's running there's no oil in the window? When it's off/cold I have it half way up the window, that's how I've always had every bike??
