If you ever travel on the London Underground, you'll see signs saying that on all the escalators and it (sort of) carries over to other places.

And besides, I used an escalator today and just stood there until it got to the top. Why would you walk up an escalator ? You might as well use the stairs.

Because the escalator is moving, so you don't climb so many steps. Also you can climb as many or as few as you want and then rest if you feel like it and you'll still get to the top quicker than using the stairs.
