Graphite exhaust gasket vs. original fibre gasket

The exhaust can pipe can be tricky to clean properly and can look clean but it's polished surface of graphite.  Attack it with wire bush or file and you might get a lot more off.

I think the original gasket on mine was compressed wire mesh but all the replacements have been graphite
