I'll normally clean my pistons up as late in the year as possible, before the weather turns, to get me through winter, then again when the warmer weather appears in early spring.
Works for me, and keeps them functioning well all year round.
I don't get any pleasure out of cleaning them in the freezing cold weather during winter, 'cos I like to take my time, so will always opt for a nice sunny day.
