The 5-valve Yamaha motors are very sensitive to exhaust design. Get it wrong and you can cause noticeable flat spots which cannot be tuned out by carb changes or whatever.
The SBS headers have such a flat spot in the 3 - 5k rpm area, right where you don't want it. Their price reflects the amount of R&D that went into the design and also the quality of build.
As has been said already, better to try to fix your damaged EXUP or shop for replacement OE headers via ebay or breaker. I believe a few here have actually imported used headers from the USA.
