If they ask for a test ride you ask if they're insured then hold their money for them, any accidents and they've bought it.

Gumtree is a general for sale site and yes like you say you break you buy but these scammers are professional and unless you are very on the ball they find ways for you to drop your guard. Most of the time they don't ask for a test ride as they just go with the asking price and send a fake PayPal invoice which is very convincing, as the ones I had I forwarded to PayPal and they were even impressed on how convincing they were.

Some simple advice I was given after my experiences was always on expensive items like vehicles:
*Cash on collection
*test rides need proof of insurance and an agreed price cash in sellers hands.

Again I know this all sounds like obvious stuff but I would hate for someone to feel as crap and stupid as I did when I stupidly dropped my guard as I was just so excited about selling my old bike for more than a paid for it.
RIP my beautiful red beast 1999 to 2017 ???
