You don't have to 'twist' anything.
Put it this way....
Sit on the bike, take the left mirror off, keep it facing you and then move it over to the right hand side and locate it in the holes.
You'll see the mirror stem is in a more upright position, repeat doing the right to left.
Secure both and adjust the angle of the mirror to give you rear view, you will find they sit at a weird position but that's because your used to the way they are now. When I done it I had far better view with original position but I'm a short arse at 5'5" and not broad, so I can see no problems.
