Sorted for now. Put the old cable back on, near its end of life but works fine.
It turned out to be the outer cable had come out the crimped steel bend.
My fault for being tight, but ive always brought aftermarket cables.
Yamaha are a bit high at approx. £50 but don't want to be let down again so will have to order one.
