Welcome Michael, I'm from Glasgow as well. I had an fzs600 for a while and then moved up to the fzs1000 as I preferred a bit more torque. Some would caution it's quite a powerful bike for a first big bike, but it will only go as quick as you make it 
The FZ1 is a slightly more sporty seating position and has a bit more top end oomph, whereas the gen 1 is a bit more torquey low down and more of an upright seating position (which is good for me as I've got a dodgy knee). Aside from that there are obviously styling differences. Just depends what sort of riding you will be doing and what your budget is as to what is a better fit really.
