Second gear's a bit of a weak spot on the Fazer.
It can be difficult to get it to engage cleanly and tends to drop out under power which obviously does it no good. If you catch it early enough, changing the drum and selector forks will restore normal operation. Deefer gave an excellent write-up on the job here.
When I changed mine I found there is another problem related to the escapement mechanism (rocking hook thing) on the shift shaft. While you still have to get the clutch out of the way it's an easier job than getting new selector forks in.
