I've been told that bike electrics should reside on LHS of the bike so they are protected from rain when bikes on the side stand.

Never hear that one before. Can't see it making any difference which side as the same amount of rain will fall on the top of both sides. The type of socket you should be using will have a waterproof cap on it when not in use, but you probably knew that  .
