Sounds like a bad earth to me too, have you tried replacing the main earth wire?
Also I think there are a couple more earth wires coming off the loom, but I do not have a wiring diagram to check, the alternator and rectifier might also have poor earths so worth while checking these.
As with most electical gremlins it is usually frustratingly long winded trying to cure them.
