I came back through Calais at Easter. Approaching on the Autoroute from Belgium, loads of trucks were very slow and as I came up the outside at about 50mph, I saw why there were loads of - presumably North/Horn Africans - all over the motorway. Very dangerous. I actually went into Calais centre-ville to get some food, which was a masterstroke, as the entrance to the port from the A16 was tailed back out of the port, but the local road that I on was clear and it fed me and a camper straight into the controls.
I understand that some migrants want to come to the UK due to English being their first language, but it seems apparent that many believe - aided and abetted by traffickers - that the UK is a land of milk-and-honey. The Schengen zone has led to unprecendented free movement and pressures. Hungary is erecting border fencing, the last time I crossed into Italy from Switzerland (on a minor-ish crossing) there were checks in place and France has put controls back in at Menton.
I'm off to wherever next week, but i'm considering Portsmouth-Cherbourg (sodding rip-off cost wise), as Dover-Calais looks painful and Dover-Dunkirk/Folkestone-Coquelles not much better.
