Another handicapped rider who should never have had a racing licence returned to was Robert Dunlop. If his racing ban had been enforced likely as not Robert Dunlop would still be alive.

After my accident in 2002, having spending 3 months in hospital and 9 trips to the operating theatre, which for 3 weeks they did not know if I would survive, I arrived in to the consultant 2 months after being released from hospital for a check up in my bike gear, his comment was "Your back on the bike I see". I replied "Yes" and expected a lecture, but his reply surprised me "That's good, going back to what you always did before the accident is good for your recovery, mentally and physically, just be careful"
