fuel tap, wasted fuel?
#7

With the tank stationary it takes 1.5 litres before fuel gets to the filter part of that stand up. You wont get all that by doing away with the stand pipe because there is about 0.2 litres in the depressions below the fuel tap fitting face level. Probably gain a bit over 1 litre in practice along with any water that might be in there from condensation etc. Any bits of rust ect should get caught with the in-line fuel filter and IMHO any water is probably better being burned off than staying in the tank.

Embarrassingly I can give a partial answer to this. After recently topping up with 11 litres of diesel I got about 1.5 miles before I felt a slight hesitation from the engine, quickly followed by big loss of power and clouds of smoke from the exhaust. Fortunately I was able to coast to another garage and sort it out with no ill effects. I didn't think I had done such a stupid thing until I checked my receipt.  :o .
I would think with the tap turned off you might get nearly a mile. I'm sure there are a few on here who have done it.
