Balancing the carbs is honestly easier than it would seem - just don't get duanted and do it methodically.
Take off the tank, fit tubes from a carb balancing kit (just a set of gauges that measure the amount of pressure in the system), use a long screwdriver to adjust the screws on the carb until it's balanced on your gauges - iirc you need to balance carbs 1&2 as a pair, 3&4 as a pair, then each pair together.
There's a really nice post here that goes through the whole process start to finish including fiddly bits I've likely forgotten, what you spend on tools will pay for itself in a year or so when you come to do them again.
