Am I right in assuming you have to book either the ferry or camping, you can't just get on your bike and go last minute.com ?

I don't think you need to book, but you'll be frowned upon by any local authority finding you just pitching a tent in a field near the course, all the campsites are generally booked well in advance, but you might be lucky if you get online and email them as there might be cancellations etc
