This is true, but I'm not convinced that an economical engine will be able to take advantage as much. I have an MG ZS with a 2.5L V6 - this gets about 2-3 MPG better on its average of 28 - so it can just about justify the fuel cost on mileage but it's still expensive to run
The RX-8 on the other hand I haven't tracked on normal fuel but it averages more like 17 MPG but I'm not sure if it will take advantage of the higher RON or not being a rotary engine. I guess it's possible but I still don't know as much about them as I do typical piston engines
