Ivanised is the way to go... I sold a gen 1 to my mate a couple of years ago with 110'000 miles on the clock. I'm gutted i sold it to him because he rode it for a while and the chain snapped causing engine casing damage. He repaired it, but didn't do a great job with the sump, which still leaks slightly, so it's been off the road ever since. I offered to buy it back off him, but he won't sell it back, so it looks like it's going to rot in his garden and never be seen again! 
If it's broken, it's not fixed.
