ended up with a Sony cybershot dsc wx350.
Really pleased with it.fits into jeans/jacket pocket nice and has a x20 optical and x40 digital zoom which is better than the two lenses I used to lug around with my cannon.
cost me around £150 mark.
How do you find the battery life with that? This review says its good for 470 shots!

This review gives the camera a decent writeup too as well as reviewing its competitors.

So its good to hear someone who has used a DSLR as well to give their opinion as I wouldn't just trust some blog review.
I've been looking around for a new compact recently. Most of the cheaper compacts have small sensors and quote large mega pixel numbers. A lot have a big zoom range which means the lens is slow (in terms of letting light in). All this could lead to poor pictures in less than perfect light. Sometimes I think a lower zoom range/better lens would be better. They are all all-auto with few manual controls which I prefer.
They all seem very small as well. When I'm out on my biking tours I quite often stop and take photos with gloves on. My Canon was fine but I know the tiny Sonys wouldn't be.
I guess you need to have a play before you buy to find out what suits.
I use this site www.dpreview.com a lot as it seems in depth and unbiased. Unfortunately they don't seem to review lower cost cameras.
I've been into photography since the 80s and learnt a lot from reading Amateur Photographer mag, so Id trust what they say. www.amateurphotographer.co.uk
Guess what, they don't review many sub £200 compacts either.
Seems the people who have bought the camera like it overall. There are some reports of defects though.
