K&N filter needed please

I bought a fazer and it just wasn't running properly for me to find out there was a car sponge in the air filter not a happy bunny

Not massively mechanically minded to change the OEM one, that just seems too difficult and I was told the K&M would be better for it. 

So was that a sponge AS a filter or a sponge was well as the filter.
Also the OEM and K+N both fit the same
And if you have got that far to see the sponge then you are almost there to change it
