I was a runner for over 50 years and my knees are shot to feck. To be honest if it is fittness you want to maintain nothing is better than swimming. No impact on any joints and is also a full cardio workout as well.
If you continue to run make sure when you finish you do stretching exercises , squats etc!
Lew im a relatively young un here but ive gotta agree. I did running during a short 5 years in the Army and ok it is functional but to do it to extremes isnt exactly good on the body and i would even at my age say that a mixture of decent weight training & some kinder on the joints cardio excercise is far more beneficial in the long term.
My old man took up running at 59 & he is hooked on it & the tendency is to run longer, faster, further, timing, garmin gps, facebook running updates, running clubs etc etc.....it can become addictive.......he is now 62 and he's off for an x ray on his knees today because his joints just cant take it regardless how much fancy kit he has bought and all the indicators he is getting he just cant seem to accept that the running is trashing him.
Go to the gym instead and see how much a decent squatting or deadlifting sesh can get you blowing outta yur arse more than a jog will.
Easiest way to go fast........don't buy a blue bike
