www.speedtest.net will give you an idea of the true throughput speed. Be careful though as these sites can lie too. They are only really any good at telling you how fast the cable connection into your building is. Once you get onto the WiFi network all sorts of strange things can happen.
As Clay says, the 100Mbps bit is the adaptors top speed not the actual connection.
As far as boosters go. How strong a signal do you get? If its weak then a booster would help if placed somewhere closer to the normal WiFi origin.
