Further information:

You can generally burn most common Audio formats to proper Audio CDs. Windows 8 I think can do this natively now, but I personally use Infrarecorder

MP3 and M4A are definitely supported, not sure about MP4. MP4 is a Video format, not Audio. Some applications can extract the Audio from a Video if that is what you want to do

Be aware that Audio CDs and MP3 CDs are two very different things. The former is compatible with all Car Stereos to the best of my knowledge, the latter is more specialised but allows you to have a longer length of audio on a single disc (more songs)
