I tend to go for sports touring tyres rather than pure sports, modern ones are just as grippy for us 'normal riders'.
Had a few full on sports tyres, and they seem to take forever to warm up, wear out twice as quick, and are a bit rubbish in the wet.
I don't think you really need an intermediate on/off road tyre, even for our bombed out roads. If you hit a pothole, even an off road tyre ain't going to save you. I'd go for the superior grip and hard wearing nature of a road tyre........... Like maxxis diamonds
