I had something similar, tax ran out of a bike I bought. I phoned DVLA and they said new log book about 4 weeks and SORN after that. I was worried because you cant have a space between tax runs out and new tax or SORN but he said it was fine if you have just bought.

there is a form that you can send off with the logbook application that you can apply for sorn.
