Excuse the pun but your on the right track and yes they do wear out.
My Fazer 600 one had the same problem at around 70000 miles with the resistance varying and I bought a Suzuki one for £40 which is exactly the same and it has been fine since.
Most of the 3 wire ones like the Fazer ones are simple passive devices with just a potentiometer inside.
Amazingly enough the Suzuki part is only £80 brand new whereas the Yamaha part is £240. The only difference being the box it is in. I don't believe any cardboard box is worth £160 :lol
Mikuni make the 600 ones and Keihin make the 1000 ones.
