That's for the suggestions, been outside working on it. Cables not freyed either end but I think it could do a new one.  The picture shows the adjustment at the lever, I wasn't able to move the other end.  Managed to free the cable from the cover, put a small washer in between the bottom of the cable and the cover to stiffen the lever.  Seems to have fixed (used loosely) the problem.  Clutch bites with a small hand movement.  The spring looks fucked - could that cause the problems I'm having? Will read through the post and put that on my to do list.  I opened and cleaned the cover last year which looked like it had never been done before.  Need to buy a gasket to stop crap dribbling down my kickstand too!
