Could be a badly Frayed cable as Darrsi says.
This happened to me on my way home from work a couple of years ago and I discovered the cable was frayed at the sprocket cover end and was hanging on with 2 strands.
Could also be a dry clutch actuator and yours looks very dry in the picture of the cover inner .
Remove the cable and check both ends for fraying.
Follow the instruction on my post to Darrsi last year on how to grease up the actuator. you will need to buy a can of spray grease and use wd40 or brake cleaner clean it out first. http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,10124...#msg105622
