How have you spliced onto the existing wiring? If it's by one of those insulation displacement clamps, was it the correct size for your cable? If it's too large it might not have cut through the insulation enough to actually make contact with the conductors.
You shouldn't need to worry about relays, the current taken by LEDs is very small, the existing wiring will cope OK.
