Help needed with posts
#9
There are three methods of attaching photos to posts; Attachments, Aeva Media and Hotlinking

Attachments - This is done by using the "Additional Options..." link underneath the text area that you enter your post (except when using Quick Post). These images are tagged on to the end of your post and are uploaded to the FOC-U site. FOC-U hosts them until the systems administrators remove them (if ever). This is technically a finite resource for them, but I'm uncertain as to how much of an issue it is at current. You are also restricted to a maximum of 4 attachments per post. Edit / Note - on some peoples computers, these do not show correctly as the browser does not render a preview of the image and instead offers up the image as a download for the end use. This is typically nothing to do with your post and is beyond your control for this method

Aeva Media - This allows an image to be embedded in a post in line with text and the image will show in the Media section of the site. It also allows you to add a title and description to the image. You can have as many as you like (in theory) and these are again uploaded to and hosted by FOC-U. They are removed if the administrators decide to remove them. The Aeva Media method is used using the [Image: smg.gif] icon above the text area for entering a post. It is currently the 5th option on the second line

Hotlinking - This is the method that Nick was referring to when talking about photobucket. This allows you to again embed an image in line with text, but the source of the image is from a different location on the web - you can not use a file direct from your computer unless uploading it to a 3rd party location (i.e. photobucket). Some sites prevent hotlinking so this may result in a few issues (dedicated sites like photobucket obviously don't). In addition, as the source is not FOC-U, you may have little control over the persistence of the image whereby it may be deleted. This can cause issues in old threads, especially for guides, if someone tries to view the thread and all the helpful images are gone...

All of the posts are also controlled by BBCode - this is a special form of web syntax designed to allow safe text formatting and prevent people from doing anything harmful with raw HTML (on which BBCode is mostly based). The basics, such as bold, italics, underline and strikethrough can easily be controlled this way as demonstrated below in the code segment

Code:
[b]bold[/b]
[i]italics[/i],
[u]underline[/u]
[s]strikethrough[/s]
