I'm sure it was so that if the bike was parked next to the pavement, facing in the direction of the flow of the flow of traffic, then the tax disc could be seen without standing in the road to look at it. Hence why it's in the passenger side of the windscreen on a car.
A quick google search throws up this:

About quarter of the way down this page^^ in the display tax disc section it says that it should be on the left hand side/kerb side of the motorcycle.

P.S. Just to be clear, I couldn't care less where anyone wants to display their tax disc but it's good to know the facts. As you say, won't need to do it for much longer anyway!
