Tesco and Virgin both use the O2 network.  Whether on PAYG or contract go for a provider that uses either the O2 or Vodaphone network as they are proper mobile phone networks using both 900 and 1800 GSM, EE (Orange/T-Mobile) only use 1800 GSM so coverage never will be as good.  Whatever you do, don't go for 3 if you expect to be able to make and receive calls......
