I was told a story by a friend years ago, he was a regular at a pub and in the car park was a motorbike it had been there for some time and the landlord fed up with an abandoned bike took ownership of it so to speak and then gave it to my friend, the original owner came out of the woodwork and reported it stolen. My friend was prosecuted and gained a criminal record.
So i m thinking if it is reported to the police with the way you came to own it you have covered your back.
Way I've always understood it is after informing police you have to show every effort to find owner. ads in shop windows local papers etc and after 3 months if not come forward the bike is yours
