Sorry to hear about the accident HJFazer, hope you're better mended than your Fazer!?
I originally repaired my shroud, fixing it in place with a piece of clothes peg (read it somewhere on here) then removed it completely.
The bike passed MOT like this no problem. I did have an Osram Nightnreaker + bulb in, which has a silvery blue tinted end cap. not sure of this went some way to mimicking (more effectively) the job of the shroud.
you can remove the shroud by poking it INTO the headlight from behind, and then use a magnetic stick or a wire coathanger or a well trained mouse on a leash to fetch it out through the larger right hand (H4) bulb hole.
That's written on here somewhere too, but thought I'd save you the search!
