After a bit of headscratching and umming and ahhing we made some alloy drop outs to slide over the fork leg bottoms. There was just not enough strength/meat on the wood dropouts and I didn't fancy risking it...
So these were knocked up, alloy tube turned down so they were about 2mm thick then a box section was cut into two "L" shapes. These were then tig welded onto the tubes and sloted to accept the axle. They look pretty trick! These were pressed in with some araldite.
