PS, if you don't know what day you will be returning, just book a couple of days before when you know for sure. You only need the booking reference to check in, you don't need a ticket. For ease I've used the tunnel for the past 6 years, but it is slightly more expensive. The trains have been in use for a long time and seem to be wearing out. The last 2 or 3 times there have been delays due to mechanical failure. Sometimes its been very quick. Turn up at Calais, check in on the next train, no passport check, waved straight through the holding area, down the ramp onto the train, doors closed and we were off. 5 minutes from turning up to leaving
