Had a set of bikeit cheapo muffs for 12 years, and used them every winter (put about 50+k on them now). Although I've modified them a bit by screwing bar ends through them, and inserting wire round the front to stop them distorting they work brilliantly.
Fleece lined, waterproof, and now they stay where I put them. They're not massive, so don't look like boxing gloves on a 5 year-old kid either.
I think they cost me £15 when I bought them, one of the best 'sensible' buys ever. You don't necessarily need mega bucks ones if your inventive. ;D
